If we all gave a film the same score and the same review then life would be pretty dull. Yes, Captain America is a three star film as most of the papers seem to be agreeing upon. It's average. It doesn't do anything new, it's ridiculous and predictable.
However, I thoroughly enjoyed (nearly) every minute of it . Chris Evans will now always be known as Captain America to me (as with Robert Downey Jr as Iron Man and Chris Hemsworth as Thor) and he really gets the essence of the character down to a tee. He's heartwarming, especially during the first half of the film as simply Steve Rodgers, fighting for himself and others (against the 'bullies') even when all the odds are against him. He really is a true hero! We see this especially in training when weedy Rodgers lunges to smother himself over a grenade to save his fellow men. Unfortunately when he becomes near invincible everything seems a little too easy and we lose any sense of peril. Saying this the second half really is a spectacle. It really does feel as if the comics have come to life with Cap launching his shield and swinging from the rafters. The only complaint is that it does lose a bit of its charm half way through when it becomes a predictable (but thrilling) action adventure.
The rest of the characters are a little forgettable, even Hugo Weaving as Red Skull who is really just a culmination of all the Nazi villains to come before him (his German accent is a little dodgy too!). Although the Red Skull make up is fantastic.
The two hours flew by for me. Captain America was never my favourite Avenger, being a little too much of a goody goody, and having no real flaws after his super solider treatment making him a little uninteresting. However the film is fantastic fun and I can't wait to see how he fits into the modern world with the Avengers next year. A year! How can I wait that long!? Marvel studios really do make consistently top quality, passionate and entertaining comic book films, which is a real treat considering some of the rubbish adaptations released. [B+]
