Thematically following on from Straw Dogs I coincidentally watched The Wicker Man. Another film about a breakdown in typical western morals and being alienated by the local community. With a more profound focus on religion The Wicker Man sees Sergeant Howie (Edward Woodward) called to a remote Scottish Island in search of a missing girl, where he's confronted by a seemingly oddball village of pagans.

The Wicker Man does well to draw you into the pagan world of surreal rituals, strange locals and random unexpected outbursts of musical-esque songs (some of which are actually pretty good! The singing, nude Britt Eckland scene is often voted sexiest scene of all time! But I think I found it more bizarre than anything else). The atmosphere is well reflected and blended an unusual but successful mix of unease and almost comical circumstances which resulted in a 'what the fuck' experience.
The Sergeant was a good representation of Christian narrow mindedness but this meant it was difficult to ever connect with him. Whilst the famous (or equally infamous) ending is undoubtedly horrific I didn't really care enough about him to be deeply affected. However his character is fitting considering the religious symbolism and clash in cultures.
The Wicker Man is iconic, influential and an interesting, sometimes even amusing watch. Certainly a cult classic and well worth checking out. [B+]
