Despicable Me 2 VS Monsters University

With a distinct lack of interesting or original films over the summer, I turned to animations for something I knew I'd have a good time with. Even though both were sequels/ prequels, with Pixar 'never let you down' studios and Despicable Me being one of the best animations outside of Pixar in the past few years, I was happy to let them both fill the gaping void of recent cinema trips. But which would I pick if I could only see one?

Looks...
They both look fantastic, with the quality of animation improving in the A list films notably every year. Pixar are renowned for their attention to detail especially in the backgrounds, and the university setting lends itself to this with a bustling student lifestyle and huge array of monster oddities. However Despicable Me 2 does a grand job itself, and whilst its environments aren't as busy and detailed they are varied and lovely to look at. I think the Pixar detail and original monster designs just comes out on top though.
Winner - MU

Plot...
In terms of plot Monsters University does a nice job in linking itself up to the sequel with a number of fun cameos and references to appeal to fans. The story itself revolves around a university competition that Mike and Sully must compete in, against unlikely odds, to get back on the course. As with most Pixar films the morals and  themes are relevant and more mature than that of Despicable Me. Despicable Me 2 is solid enough but unoriginal and a bit forgettable.
Winner - MU

Characters...
Both films have second films probably due to their original, fun and interesting characters. Mike and
Sully's distinct differences and relationship, Gru's quirky likeable relationship with the children. Both are novel characters in novel situations and its fun to see more of them. The other new characters in both films are great additions, so I'm going to call this a draw. Although the minions get a little bit too much air time in Despicable Me 2 for my liking.
Winner - Draw

Monsters University had the upper advantage in terms of nostalgia for me personally, but both competently continue the original, interesting worlds where they came from. Monsters University edges it, but only just. Largely for its more mature tones and vibrant bustling university setting. However they are both kids films and they do a very good job of being kids films. If you can see both I would recommend it!
