Favourites of the Last Year

Looking back since my last review, I've seen a lot of great films (and a lot of mediocre films), so it was difficult to pick out my favorites but I made an attempt and here they are, old and new.

Django Unchained - Most likely the film of 2013. It had something for everyone. Humour, action, fantastic soundtrack, great performances and a good familiar revenge story Tarantino style.

Iron Man 3 - After the peak of the Avengers last year I'd almost lost interest in Marvel but Iron Man 3 managed to spike my interest again. It was everything good about Iron Man rolled into one (hopefully) final outing for the hero.

Life Of Pi - Stunning visuals, with an engaging, original plot. Very easy on the eye and the brain, but with a nice twist at the end.

Stoker - Sinister, dark, sexual and engrossing. Chan Wook Park retains his Oldboy style whilst exploring new areas. A little slow to start but once it had me I was hooked.

The Perks of Being a Sunflower - One of my favorite films of 2012. It had so much heart and resonated so profoundly with modern teenage lifestyles, unlike any film I've ever seen. Moving yet hilarious.

Paprika - One of my first non Ghibli animes, Paprika was bizarre. So bizarre and hypnotic I couldn't stop watching. A great plot and equally hypnotic soundtrack too!

Ponyo - I might do a Ghibli mega review soon but Ponyo has to be the happiest of the lot. Undeniably adorable.

Total Recall (Original) - Ridiculous, relentless fun. Arnie and Mars, what more could you want? Saw the reboot too - it was predictably awful and completely drained the original of all its charm down to a bland action thriller.

Argo - Special mention to Argo. The only real disappointment since this time last year. Whilst I can usually tell if a film is going to be bad I was blown away by how much hype this received after watching it. What overblown, boring, predictable, pro American rubbish. Well done Ben you're an actor and you can successfully direct a film...
