When asked what my favourite film is, or top 3, American Beauty instantly comes to mind. I've only seen it twice, both times quite recently in fact, but its left me with such a powerful, lasting impact that not many other films have claimed to do.
Firstly, its a solid movie in all general respects. The acting is fantastic from all the cast, especially Kevin Spacey as Lestor Burnham (yes, that's were the Lester comes from in my name) who gives a convincing, believable yet completely hilarious and quirky performance. Wes Bentley as the disturbing but ultimately (and debatebly) most reasoned character Ricky Fitts, also puts on an excellent show. These quirky performances are effortlessly aided through a snappy and intelligent script, which remains relatively simple yet injects so much thought at the same time. The plot is engaging, interesting and has rather unexpected twists.
Sam Mendes also handles the camera well and the piano based soundtrack is iconic yet simple, adding to the quirky, thought provoking suburban atmosphere.
In my opinion it more than ticks all the movie boxes as shown. On top of that it asks us so many questions about our own lives. What am I doing with my life? Are there many things I'd rather be doing? Why can't I live the life I want to? Will I regret my life when I die? How amazing life actually is! It casts a daunting realisation which is thought provoking, crushing and morale boosting at the same time. I can't wait to watch it again! [A*]
